Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
